So there’s a new hacked firmware for the PSP that allows playing PSX (playstation 1) games on it. This gave me a reason to buy a PSP, so I started looking.

A few days after some intense research and price searching, I was able to find one for $135 on Craigslist. It is firmware 2.71 in perfect condition with a game (Madden 2007), a charger and the manual. This was the best price by FAR that I’ve EVER seen a PSP available for. I saw the entry right as it came up on Craigslist, gave the seller a call (mere minutes after he posted), and was at his house within a half hour.

I bought a used 1 GB Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo for $21 shipped on Anandtech. 1 GB may or may not be large enough, we’ll see soon. The mem-stick should arrive in about 4 or 5 business days.

Once I get the memory stick, I will be able to put on the new hacked firmware. Here are the steps required:

  • Find out what version motherboard is on your PSP
    • Go to http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/369035
    • Follow instructions.
  • Downgrade to firmware 1.50 from 2.71
    • Go to http://www.psp-hacks.com
    • Go to Downloads
    • Go to Firmware
    • Go to Downgraders
    • Download Easy 2.71 Downgrader and follow instructions
  • Upgrade from 1.50 to 3.03 OE-A (currently the latest)

I read about this a short while ago and I’ve been waiting to try it out on my 1.5 PSP (I have a 4GB MS Pro Duo).. but I lost my analog stick thingie (I was using a replacement as the stock one sucks) and I’m waiting for a new set to arrive.

Needless to say, I’ll be wiping most of my PSP games off my MS and playing PSX games instead. I was going to ask if you’ve actually tried the PSX emulation yet but you obviously haven’t 😉
